Welcome to a small slice of digital porn history.

A while ago, I came across a few old backups on 3.5" disks and a CD that I forgot I had. Most of the stuff on there was the usual backup things: mail, documents and a few games and programs I used a lot. But among them was a directory that was simply called "DOS". And right away I knew what this was: it was my first digital porn stash *ever*.

Exited, I took a look through the few directories and took a very pleasant trip down memory lane. Porn, like certain songs or smells, pushes that special nostalgia-button that nothing else can reach. But not only a time-capsule of my "preferences" from my teenage years, it was also evidence of a new and fresh phenomena -- digital pornography -- and it showed some adoring flaws and beginner mistakes that eventually would've been ironed out as time went by.

The oldest files, dating April 1998, were downloaded from BBSes with a 28K8 modem. I ran MsDOS 5 or 6, and would use a terminal (a very primitive "browser") to dial into a BBS where you'd get a list of categories to choose from. After chosing my preference for the day (back then that was usually "Butts" or "Facials"), you'd get a list of filenames plus a short description, like so:

You'd scroll through the list, mark the files that sounded interesting, and when you were satisfied with your selection you'd leech the files. Twenty minutes later, you'd have 30 pictures on your harddrive.

Some of the other files came from my very first days of having an internet connecetion at home through those free CompuServe try-out CDs. I was using the Mosaic browser and found porn on small sites that people just set up themselves. I also used a program called WinVN to download images from newsgroups, which was a pretty hit-and-miss deal: sometimes proper filenames or descriptions were used, but in many cases people just dumped images in there, and you wouldn't know what you were leeching till the downloads were finished. I hung out a lot in alt.binaries.erotica.teens, which was such a lawless and unruly place back then that you would run into child porn and other sick stuff regularly. And you wouldn't even know it till you had already downloaded it. (I deleted it immediately and none of that stuff is in this archive.)

Later on I found websites like The Hun's Yellow Pages, Ampland, or Green Guy's Link-O-Rama. Even later, I found #xxxpasswords on IRC where they would dump hacked passwords for member areas of sites like busty-amateurs.com or atkingdom.com, a few of the sites I visited on a regular basis -- but that's 1999/2000 and later, and none of those pics are in this archive. This is just the really, really early stuff.

Although happy I found this, I wasn't sure what to do with it. I didn't want to keep this on my "normal" backups, and I didn't feel like making a little secret archive that I'd probably forget about anyway. So, I'm zipping this up, writing this text, and I'm offering it to the internet for whoever is interested. I won't be advertising this on forums or whatever, so if you come across it and think other people might like it -- please spread the files.
